about

This quite obviously a song about moving to a new city. But it is also a mutual break up song. I wrote this a long time ago while moving to Manchester. After a while the time came to make a choice between my childhood sweetheart in the country and the big city. We both came to the decision we were better moving in our own separate ways

lyrics

Three years have passed since you and I last felt that country air in our hair, and a world without care. And though we’re apart how we feel in our hearts hasn’t changed, hasn’t faltered, though our lives have been altered. So I’ll say don’t go changing baby, you know its a strange old world out there. But all I’m hearing lately is how your world is boring you to death. And I love you all the same but we can’t play this game no more. When all that I am is taken for granted. All that I sew, flooded when planted. But I just can’t tell if we’re drifting apart or if distance has ruptured this rift in our hearts but we need to get some air. And all that I know is this city, This city’s for me. You’re scared into staying at home where its paying but I know that its hurting you. So you work and you work just trying to make it through. Your friends have all left and you find yourself bereft despising aspirations of all those spread across the nation. So don’t go changing baby, you know its a strange old world out there. Don’t go baby. Cause you know oh how I love you all the same, but we can’t play this game. And I thought that we could win, but the winning days have been. On the day I went away you should have made me say goodbye. All that I am is taken for granted. All that I sew, flooded when planted. But I just can’t tell if we’re drifting apart or if distance has ruptured this rift in our hearts but we need to get some air. And all that I know is this city, This city’s for me.
