about

This song describes a phenomenon that is not new, but has in this new social media age taken on a new face. It is the phenomenon of the echo chamber. There have been a number of elections in the world recently with seemingly shocking results. The sides have been split on the subject of immigration mainly. Many people will remember going to bed absolutely certain their side would win only to wake up in the morning and find the majority of their country disagrees with them. This has always been the case to some extent, but the algorithms on social media sites exacerbate things. I think it is dangerous because it splits people into tribes, unwilling to listen to anything the other side has to say. The sound-bytes in these clips show extreme reactions from people on both sides of the immigration debate. I do not own the material used, but all the material comes from public sources and I have used them creatively as sonic instruments, rather than as the clips themselves

lyrics

Contagion overnight, at least thats how it seemed. I awoke, unaware there was shouting in the streets: Crying “Burn all the bridges and board the boats to the sea. The countrys infected and they’ll not infect me.” They’ll not infect me with the lies of our fiscal demise, in their pinstriped suits with their dollar figure eyes preaching “Turn on your brothers, the old and the weak.” While their cronies sneak around the back: Attack, repeal, repeat and now theres nothing you can do, theres nothing you can say that they don’t know. Does thou see the depths of my despair when those at the top refuse to share. When apathy and greed turns to anarchy in need I’ll be there, yes I’ll be there. And we’ll gather the infected and tie them to a pyre, and we’ll burn that blue plague with a red and yellow fire yes we’ll burn that blue plague with a red and yellow fire. I wrote a message on the day the infected it showed little blue dots and the way they’re connected. It spread like the virus that it represented and it felt like the whole world was opposed. And the thought of another five years makes me wonder, do they know or do they care if we’re governed by monsters. Do you know or do you care? If we’re governed by… Does thou see the depths of my despair when those at the top refuse to share. When apathy and greed turns to anarchy in need I’ll be there, yes I’ll be there. And we’ll gather the infected and tie them to a pyre, and we’ll burn that blue plague with a red and yellow fire yes we’ll burn that blue plague. And you know it will be such a pretty flame with a red and yellow fire when we burn that blue plague.
